Palearctic Region
This huge region is divided into two parts with the mighty Ural mountains providing their ecological divide; it has obvious natural boundaries with the oceans and frozen wastes to the east, west and north and the Sahara, Arabian deserts and the Himalayas to the south.
The two parts of the region show contrasting fortunes with their dragonflies. The Western Palearctic with a total of hardly more than 150 species is the poorest of all global regions whereas the Eastern Palearctic is much richer with more than 400 species and more than 170 in Japan alone.
The blue spots on the map show where I have studied dragonflies except the one in the middle of the eastern Palearctic, that is just wishful thinking!
