This is the most delicate and beautiful lestid; however its taxonomic status is very confusing and still unresolved. It extends across Europe and into Asia. In Europe two sub-species occur. In north Africa some authorities consider that there is another distinct species L. numidicus (Samraoui B. et al 2003). As one moves east across Europe so the situation confuses further where populations resembling L.v.marikovskii ,described originally from Kazakstan, have been found.
The two subspecies can be separated as follows (the picture above shows the features)
- The light coloured suture (stripe) along to top of each side of the thorax is wide and complete in L.v.virens
- The equivalent suture of L.v.vestalis is narrow and incomplete
